Why panels become waste

Storm damage, re-roofing, and voluntary upgrades create volumes before modules reach true technical death. Reuse in secondary markets sometimes works; damaged glass and electronics need specialist handling.

  • Ask the installer who removes old panels where they will go
  • Prefer schemes that issue tracking or recycling certificates
  • Do not landfill intact e-waste modules
  • Store damaged panels safely pending collection — broken glass cuts

End-of-life planning is part of buying a twenty-year asset.

Transport and cost

Recycling is not always free. Build removal and logistics into upgrade budgets rather than discovering them on demolition day.

Data and frames

Aluminium frames and junction boxes have recovery value when processed properly. Informal scrap stripping can be unsafe and non-compliant.

Buyer questions on second-life panels

Used modules for sheds may be fine with eyes open on warranty (usually none) and electrical compliance. Main-home arrays deserve new, documented product.
