Insurers increasingly ask whether a property has rooftop solar, how it was installed, and whether the policy sum insured reflects the extra asset. Answering clearly beats discovering a coverage gap after a storm.

Declare the system
Tell your insurer when panels go on. Undeclared alterations can complicate claims. Ask whether the array is covered under building cover and what excess applies for roof-related events.
- Update sum insured after installation
- Keep CEC installer details and photos of fixings
- Note battery presence separately if asked
- Ask about temporary covering after storm damage
A documented install is easier to claim than a mystery array.
Storm, hail, and fire
Hail-prone regions may face higher scrutiny of panel glass and age. Bushfire zones raise ember and debris questions near arrays — see also mounting clearances and gutters.
Liability and trades
Unlicensed work can become a coverage argument. Stick to accredited installers.
After a claim
Prefer like-for-like electrical compliance over the cheapest patch. Retain replaced serials for warranty and STC history continuity where relevant.
