Home batteries are useful tools — for self-consumption, backup, and sometimes Virtual Power Plant income — but they are easy to oversell on simple payback. A clear ROI conversation separates what the battery does well from what solar already delivered on its own.

Start with solar-only cashflow
If the rooftop system already covers most daytime load, a battery’s incremental saving is the evening and overnight imports it displaces, minus standby losses and any tariff quirks. Quoting a combined “system payback” that hides a long battery recovery period is a common sales shortcut.
Where batteries earn their keep
Households with high evening peaks, time-of-use tariffs, unreliable feed-in, or export limits that strand midday surplus see stronger storage value. Backup for medical devices or home offices can justify cost even when pure cash payback is slow — but that is a resilience purchase, not an arbitrage story.
| Value lever | Stronger when… | Weaker when… |
|---|---|---|
| Peak shaving | Evening TOU rates are high | Flat cheap tariffs all day |
| Export shifting | FIT is low or export is capped | Generous FIT and open export |
| Backup | Outages are costly or frequent | Grid is highly reliable and loads are flexible |
| VPP credits | Enrolment terms are clear and stable | Payments are promotional or capped thinly |
- Ask for solar-only and solar-plus-battery payback side by side
- Confirm usable capacity, not only nominal kilowatt-hours
- Check cycle warranty and throughput limits
- Clarify backup circuits versus whole-home claims
A battery can be worth owning without being the hero of a five-year payback chart.
Rebates change the equation — temporarily
State battery incentives can transform ROI for eligible installs. Treat them as time-bound: eligibility rules, stock availability, and installer queues matter. Never assume a neighbour’s rebate still applies to your quote date.
Degradation and replacement timing
Batteries age with throughput and calendar time. A twenty-year solar payback story that assumes a single battery forever is incomplete. Include a mid-life replacement or capacity fade in long models.
Hybrid versus AC-coupled add-ons
New builds often use hybrid inverters; retrofit batteries may be AC-coupled to an existing solar inverter. Efficiency, backup behaviour, and installer ecosystem differ. ROI is not brand-deep — it is architecture-deep.
Honest next questions
If cash payback is the only goal, size storage to evening load, not to maximum marketing kilowatt-hours. If resilience matters, pay for the circuits you need and stop there.
